BMW isn’t brand new to electric vehicles, with the 2022 i4 car expanding the brand’s range of electric vehicles. It is based upon the Bavarian automaker’s most renowned model known as the 3-series. This i4 is a four-door with a low profile similar to similar-sized four series Gran Coupe. It’s competing with models like the Polestar 2 and Tesla Model 3, and the Model 3, among others.
The eDrive40 model comes with one electric motor mounted at the rear producing 335 horsepower. Meanwhile, the M50 includes an engine in the front, generating 536 horses total. Both models come with the 80.7-kWh battery, but unlike the rear-drive version, which offers an estimated driving distance of 300 miles. However, the all-wheel-drive i4 has 245 miles of range.
What’s New for 2022?
The BMW i4 is an all-new electric car anticipated to compete with models like the Tesla Model 3 and other mid-sized EV sedans when it arrives in showrooms from early to mid-2022.
According to the model, the 2022 i4 delivers electrons to two or one electric motors. The eDrive40 includes a single electric motor located on the rear axle, producing 335 horsepower. The M50 consists of two electric motors on the axles that offer all-wheel drive, making 536 horsepower and 586 pound-feet. The increased power can result in fewer acceleration times between 0 and 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The rear-drive i4 is mounted on standard 18-inch rims, while 19-inches are an option. In contrast, the all-wheel-drive M50 comes in the 20s or 19s, and it features adaptive dampers and a steering system with variable ratios. The i4 M50 we drove gave us instant and powerful thrust, and even though it weighs a lot higher than the M3, the low center of gravity lets it move smoothly and effortlessly.
Charging, and Battery Life
BMW states that its single-motor rear-drive i4 eDrive40 can be said to travel for up to 300 miles with a fully charged battery. The dual-motor, all-wheel-drive M50 is equipped with an identical 80.7-kWh battery. However, its advertised range tops out around 245 miles. It also has a 200-watt charging capacity that could add between 80 and 108 miles in only 10 minutes. The level 2 (up to 11kW) battery charger onboard will charge its battery to 0 to 100% in just 8 hours.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
The cabin of the i4 is luxuriously decorated, including the option of rose-gold trim and white leather upholstery, and light wood trim. The interior layout is the same as what’s found on the other BMW models. However, the i4-alongside the all-electric iX SUV is the first to feature an expansive and seamless display that extends more than 2/3 of the instrument panel. The four-door i4 sports an impressive rear roofline reminiscent of a coupe; however, it also has traditional trunks to the rear.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The i4 is among the very first BMWs equipped with the company’s most current infotainment system and connectivity options. The system is dubbed iDrive 8. It operates with a 14.9-inch touchscreen integrated with a 12.3-inch display of digital instruments mounted on an enormous curved display in the instrument panel. Alongside a rotary controller located on the center console, the system has advanced voice commands and numerous well-known features. This includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot.
