The Chevrolet Bolt EV is a small all-electric hatchback that’s one of the most affordable and popular electric cars on the road today. For 2022, Chevrolet has made a variety of improvements that boost the car’s appeal a bit further. The docket features more comfortable front seats, a redesigned interior, and modern styling that we think looks better than before. Standard features include forwarding collision warning, lane-keeping assistance, and more. Blind-spot monitoring, 360-degree cameras, and adaptive cruise control are just a few options.

The Super Cruise system by GM, which provides hands-free driving on selected highways, isn’t available on the Bolt hatchback. However, it is an optional feature on the new Chevrolet Bolt EV crossover. Bolt EV’s powertrain is the same as before and provides an EPA-estimated 259-mile range on a single charge. It even outperforms the competition, achieving 278 miles of range in real-world testing. This is a good range for an electric vehicle in this price range. Chevy also improved the 2022 Bolt’s ability to recharge faster on 240-volt power. However, you will likely need to fully install a special charging station at home to take advantage of this feature fully.

How does the Bolt EV drive?

The Bolt scooted from 0 to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds in our testing, which is reasonably quick for an EV in this price range. It is easy to merge onto freeways and overtake when needed. The Bolt’s brakes will be consistent and easy to manage if you don’t want to use the single-pedal mode for most of your regenerative braking slowing down. The latter is easier to use and has a wider range. There is an extra steering-wheel regen brake paddle for those who wish to maximize energy recovery. The Bolt reacts well to steering inputs and doesn’t feel dirty.

How comfortable is the Bolt EV? 

The front seats now have adequate cushioning compared to those in previous model years. While they are no longer a pain in the back on long road trips, we think they could still use some thigh support. However, the Bolt’s ride quality is still too busy and choppy due to its inability to absorb cracks in pavement and sharp-edged potholes. The Bolt is more comfortable on smooth pavement. The new climate controls are simple and redundant and can be found on the touchscreen and below the screen using physical buttons. The system responds quickly and comes standard with heated front seats and a steering wheel in the 2LT trim. The Bolt’s quiet cabin is also a big plus. Wind noise is not an issue.


The controls are thoughtfully arranged, with a handy volume knob and tune buttons to the left of the touchscreen. It takes a little time to get used to the new transmission controls. They are now a row instead of the old Bolt’s traditional shift lever. You can configure the digital instrument panel to display key information like battery information, driver efficiency, power output, etc. Thanks to the height-adjustable driver seat and the generous telescoping steering wheels, it was easy to get in and out of the car. The doors open wide, and the roofline extends to the rear hatch. Except for its width, the Bolt feels larger than you would expect. Although the cabin is narrow, there is plenty of leg and headroom.

What are the range and efficiency?

The EPA estimates the Bolt can travel 259 miles on a single charge, making it one of the better ranges in the segment for the cost. The Bolt is also expected to return 100 miles per 28 kWh of electricity consumed. On car review, real-world EV range testing showed that the Bolt could travel 278 miles using a single charge, at an efficiency of 25.7 kWh/100 miles. This is a great result. However, the Hyundai Kona Electric, which also received a similar range rating and efficiency rating from EPA, could travel more than 300 miles. The Bolt comes with an upgraded dual-level charge cord, which allows owners to swap between Level 1 (120-volt) and Level 2 (240-volt) charging. 

How’s the technology? 

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility are standard.  These smartphone integration systems will suffice because an integrated navigation system doesn’t exist. The touchscreen is large and responsive. You get two front USB ports, one regular and one USB–C. If you upgrade to the 2LT trim, additional ports are available for your rear passengers. Bolt comes standard with forwarding collision mitigation and lane-keeping assist. The 2LT trim adds blind-spot monitoring and a surround-view camera system.
