Prioritizing affordability and lightweight agility over high horsepower and high-priced exclusivity, the 2022 Subaru BRZ continues to be a pure sports car for everyone. Subaru’s all-wheel-drive lineup’s completely redesigned rear-drive-only coupe remains an original model. Similar features are planned for its mechanical sibling, that of the Toyota 86. With an engine that is naturally aspirated and has 228 horsepower and a redesigned BRZ, the BRZ is much more robust than it was before it, which at a minimum, resolves one of our major problems. Take that together with a low center of gravity, as well as ultra-light curb weight, and this boldly styled 2+2 hatchback is designed to provide the seat-of-your-pants feel that is the hallmark of all excellent sports automobiles.

What’s New for 2022?
Its 2022 BRZ introduces the new generation of Subaru’s sports lightweight automobiles. The coupe does not only measure about 0.5 inches lower and extends around 1 inch more, and its bodywork is also more distinctive than the previous. The interior has been reimagined to incorporate modern technology but without sacrificing functionality. Drivers will also appreciate the brand-new 2.4-liter flat-four-cylinder engine, which is more robust than the 2.0-liter version that it replaces.
Transmission and Performance
The engine under the hood of the brand new BRZ is a naturally-aspirated 2.4-liter flat-four-cylinder, also called the “boxer” engine. It puts out 228 horsepower as well as 184 pounds-feet of torque. It still sends power through the rear axles via a manual six-speed or an automatic six-speed. In addition to a boost in acceleration and a more responsive engine, the 2.4-liter engine is more responsive than the prior engine, but there’s no way to turn the BRZ into the most efficient car on the road. Subaru claims that it has an improved center of gravity, too, as a curb weight under 2800 pounds. This is roughly evenly divided between the rear and front. These attributes, coupled with a more robust structure, makes the BRZ much more fun to drive than ever before. Our impressions of driving revealed a lot of feedback from the steering, a steady steering control, and the ability to throw the tail over.
Its ride is a bit rough and has not a lot of refinement, but it contributes to the car’s spirited nature. Although every model is equipped with a limited-slip rear differential, the Premium model can run on 17-inch wheels, while the Limited model has 18-inches of wheels.
The Subaru BRZ is expected to earn as high as 21 miles per gallon in the city, and 30 miles per gallon when driving. These ratings pertain to automatic-equipped models. Manual models are evaluated at 20 mpg in the urban and 27 highway. If we can test one in our 70-mph fuel-economy route as part of our comprehensive testing schedule, we will be able to assess the mpg in real-world conditions.
Infotainment and Connectivity
Each BRZ comes with an 8.0-inch touchscreen located in the middle of the dashboard. It is the hub for the infotainment system. Fortunately, the screen does not rely on only tactile inputs. There are physical knobs to control volume and tune functions and various hard buttons. The display comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and accessibility to SiriusXM satellite radio.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Inside the cabin, the BRZ remains a driver-centric vehicle with a seating arrangement that is 2+2. The cabin is more contemporary and has improved technology. An all-new 7.0-inch gauge cluster flanks the driver’s seat with a fully digital display, making the tachometer its principal feature. It has a circular readout, even changing into an angular graph during the Track drive mode. The heavily cushioned front seats appear to ensure that passengers stay in place while cornering hard and are dressed with red accents to highlight the coupe’s aggressive intentions. Subaru says the BRZ is extremely forward-facing, with the low seating position, thanks to the thin roof pillars on the front.
A large cargo area that can fit four tires (for racing Naturally) when the rear seats are folded is a key feature of the coupe’s practicality.
