The Porsche 718 Boxster is a great luxury sports car. For driving appeal, this roadster is one of the best cars in the class, thanks to its punchy engines, scorching acceleration, and athletic handling. Its interior falls more in the “fine” category. Porsche’s build quality is world-class, but it’s not as luxurious as its rivals.
Porsche Boxster vs. Porsche Cayman
The Porsche Cayman, a luxury sports car, is almost identical to the Boxster except that it has a fixed-roof coupe and not a convertible. Both cars are two-seaters and have similar powertrains, handling, trims, and other features. The Cayman offers a little more cargo space. The Boxster is a better option if you are willing to spend more money on a drop-top. The Cayman is an excellent choice.
Boxster Engine Performance
There are no bad engine options in this vehicle. Even the base turbocharged four-cylinder is sufficient for most driving needs. It’s quick off the line and supplies ample passing power. Higher trims have faster acceleration and more energetic engines. Rounding out each powertrain is a manual or automatic transmission, both of which earn high praise. Turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.
How Fast Is the Boxster?
With the Sport Chrono package, Porsche claims that the Boxster and Boxster T have a top speed of 170 mph and can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 to 4.5 seconds, depending on transmission. The Boxster S kicks things up a notch with a top speed of 177 mph and a zero-to-60 time of as little as 4.4 seconds. Moving on to the six-cylinder models, the GTS 4.0 can reach up to 182 mph and rockets from zero to 60 in 4.3 seconds with the manual transmission and 3.8 seconds with the automatic. The Spyder is even faster, capable of reaching 187 mph with a zero-to-60 time as low as 3.7 seconds.
Boxster Interior Quality
This Porsche is a first-rate Porsche in terms of build quality. The fit and finish are excellent, although there are a few hard plastics. This isn’t very pleasant for a vehicle costing $60,000, but Porsche offers many material upgrades to the cabin at an additional cost. Even with the top-up, the cabin can let in lots of road and wind noise.
It takes some time to master the Boxster’s infotainment program. This is because many physical buttons look the same. The operation is easy, and the touch screen works well. However, Android Auto support is not available. A 7-inch touch screen, satellite radio, HD Radio, a six-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, two USB ports, and Apple Car Play.
Boxster Cargo Space
Porsche’s mid-engine design is a highlight. There is a trunk at the rear and a storage area up front. There are 5.3 cubic feet of storage in the front trunk, or frunk, and 4.4 cubic feet at the rear. These figures together are the average luxury sports car class.
